What does Jan van den Beld - former Secretary General of ECMA - have to say about multiple standards? He seems to be puzzled himself!

Quote from his presentation:

Q: Why do you want to have 5 [DVD related] formats? Do you still call that standardization?
A: You are well paid. Shut up

Check out the video at 4:10 and amaze yourself!

This was on Microsoft Techdays 2008, in Portugal.

The Quote is however misleading. He is admitting, that for DVDs it doesn't make sense (He asks the question and the DVD companies are giving the answer (4:30-5:05). He refers to a paper which claims that document formats are a "dynamic environment" with "lots of innovation" "one single standard is not from economical point of view not the most recommended approach" (3:00-3:50).

This is obviously bullshit as the innovation is low and everything but dynamic (hey it has a monopoly, what do you expect). And even in such an environment these claims are doubtful.
