The <NO>OOXML petition was translated by volunteers in so many languages, with their respective writing systems (Norway has two!). It shows that document formats are a global concern and we gathered a true worldwide community that wants to make a difference.

I find it important to share the effort for the promotion of interoperable digital standards policies globally. Some members of our community refer to it ironically as the "domino project". Policies like the one of the Netherlands are going to inspire other administrations to take similar steps. The call for open standards, that is standards free of vendor capture, which preserve us the "freedom to leave" regarding standard based solutions, would mount. One small step triggers the next.

This is great to see. It's going to be these small, but still very influential western countries that are going to make light of the fact that ooxml is a farce (Wales is a country according to my Welsh mate although she was very pissed so I wasn't about to debate it!)

Perhaps it might be relevant at this point to remind one and all that Alan Cox (of Red Hat and Linux Kernel hacking fame) is Welsh speaking. We may be comparatively small, but we do know which century we're in.
